In the wake of research about modern agricultural practices and the risks of chemical products, organic gardening has become a popular approach for homeowners and gardeners. Essentially, instead of using synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides that may have unintended effects on the garden ecosystem, gardeners seek to use natural products that will replenish the soil, maintain the microbiome, and nourish the crops in a balanced way.

For instance, of the alternatives to chemical fertilizers that organic gardeners use are animal dung or compost. Farmers of larger areas sometimes utilize cover crops like soybean or buckwheat, which they mow into the soil after the plants reach a certain age. As such, the soil does not need synthetic nutrient supplements. Gardeners also use organic pesticides and insect repellents such as neem oil. The lack of pesticide also keeps other animal populations up, such as spiders and birds, which eat the smaller pests and provide further plant protection.
